About The Artist
Hello people of the Interwebs and welcome to my portion of Studio412, my name is Nick Hempsey and I’ll be your guide today. Now that the awkward intro is over, let me tell you a bit about my family and I.
I have 3 fantastic and creative boys, Mason, Daiden and Elijah. I have a beautiful wife, Whitney , that God placed in my life at the opportune moment (Did you think of Captain Jack Sparrow when I said that? I did). She is the sole reason Studio412 exists today. One night during a conversation about her job I asked her, “If you could do one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?” She answered “Take pictures.” So we prayed about it and decided she should go back to school and learn more about photography. Years later here we are… the photography portion of our business is starting to grow and now I’ve decided to take the Design portion of Studio412 to a full time status.
In a way, I’ve kind of grown up around the design industry, more specifically the sign industry. My step-father, who to me is “Dad”, owned a sign company called “Signs and More…” based out of our basement in Sewell, NJ for many years. During that time, I used to play on his computer learning the different programs, I used to make decals to put on my skateboard or my truck. In a short period of time, I got fairly proficient in the software and after a momentary stint in the Navy, and then trying to make it as a professional drummer, I moved to South Carolina and went to work as a designer at a local sign shop in North Myrtle Beach. This is where I really started honing my skills as a designer. I became even more proficient in software such as Photoshop and Illustrator and was able to really get a good feel for what design is all about.
I was also attending a small church that met in a high school called Barefoot Church. The attendance in 2005 was approximately 125 people. One day Clay NeSmith, the lead pastor, asked me if I could replicate a series graphic for them. At the time I thought the idea of working on a graphic for an up and coming church was pretty cool, but looking back on it, it was really the stepping stone to where I am today. Eventually I was volunteering at Barefoot literally at a full time capacity, until God said it was time to put me on as a full time paid staff member. This point in my life is when I started getting heavy into series branding and video production. I had the great opportunity to learn and develop so much while working at Barefoot; Animation and motion graphics, series branding, green screen and video production, live streaming internet video, website development and I even got to play drums and bass every once in awhile. Four years later, Barefoot has an average weekend attendance of around 3,000, I can’t say I am the reason for that… lol… but I know my role helped in it.
So here we are today, God has called me to now take the knowledge and skill set that I’ve acquired throughout my life and use them to help businesses and churches/ministries reach their full potential and take things to a ‘hole ‘notha level through their visual media.
If you read this entire bio, you get a round of applause; I’m not one for reading… I’m more of a “look at the pictures kind of guy”, so I wouldn’t have made it this far. It’s odd enough that I managed to type all this out. lol… haha…
Cheers.
